Enterprise data recovery solutions
Enterprise solutions are provided for data at the workstations and servers. The process starts with disaster planning and adoption of procedures by keeping the multiple probabilities of media damages in view.
Workstations: – Network workstations are made up of Desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices. When a workstation media fails, it may affect only that specific computer or others in the network also, depending upon the applications installed in it.
Servers: – When the server based media get damaged they can influence the working of computers in the entire network. Data salvaging from server system follows the path of Recovery, Restore and Back up procedures. Windows servers can be application-servers (printer, file systems etc.), domain-servers (department management like login authentication, user profile storage, activity management etc.) and domain controllers (managing and controlling organizational activities, database hosting, ERP application hosting, centralized admin activities etc.).
Recovery process: – Data recovery from the workstations may involve diagnosis for logical errors, virus and hardware failures. Technicians from the EDP (Electronic Data Processing) department carry out the diagnosis and determine the causes and remedies. Data is extracted from the storage disks and media is repaired or replaced depending on the extent of damage. The extracted data is copied onto a media in working condition and it is installed onto the workstation.
Server media restoration and data recovery is said to be complex and time consuming process. Since most of the centralized data is stored in the server, its volume will be proportionately large. Before taking recovery measures, the technician connects the workstations to a back up domain controller if such a facility is available. It ensures that workstations continue to work while the server recovery is in progress.
The server is shut down and the storage media is setup for diagnosis. If the OS in the media has collapsed, the disk is taken out from the computer and connected as “slave” to a main working disk. The main disk is powered on and the OS is loaded. Diagnostic tools in the main disk are used to scan the logical and physical damages in the failed disk.
In case of logical failures, they are set right by the OEM software tools. In case of mechanical or electrical damages, the technician uses a combination of hardware tools and OEM software applications to repair the disk. OS is reloaded after formatting the primary partition. Network settings are restored into the disk and it is reinstated back onto the primary domain controller. Now the technician freezes the activity of backup server, logout the users and perform a mirroring activity from the backup server onto the logical partitions of primary server. Once all the data is restored, the primary domain controller is set back in action.
